PostgreSQL
Connect QoreDB to PostgreSQL and any Postgres-compatible service such as Supabase, Neon, TimescaleDB or CockroachDB.
PostgreSQL is QoreDB's primary supported engine. Anything that speaks the Postgres wire protocol works through this driver, including managed providers like Supabase, Neon, TimescaleDB and Aiven.
Quick connect
The fastest path is to paste a connection string. QoreDB recognizes both postgres:// and postgresql:// schemes and parses the URL into the form fields automatically.
postgresql://USER:PASSWORD@HOST:5432/DATABASE
postgresql://USER:PASSWORD@HOST:5432/DATABASE?sslmode=require
Open New Connection, choose PostgreSQL, paste the URL, click Test connection, then Save.
Connection fields
If you prefer the form, fill these fields directly:
| Field | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Host | Yes | Hostname or IP address of the server. |
| Port | Yes | Defaults to 5432. |
| User | Yes | Database user. |
| Password | Optional | Stored encrypted in the vault. Leave empty if the user has no password. |
| Database | Optional | Database name. If omitted, QoreDB connects to the default database for the user. |
| SSL mode | Optional | One of disable, prefer, require, verify-ca, verify-full. |
You can also expand the SSH tunnel section if your database is behind a bastion. See SSH tunneling.
SSL / TLS modes
PostgreSQL supports a granular set of SSL modes; QoreDB exposes all of them.
| Mode | Encrypted? | Server cert checked? | Server hostname checked? |
|---|---|---|---|
disable | No | No | No |
prefer | If offered | No | No |
require | Yes | No | No |
verify-ca | Yes | Yes | No |
verify-full | Yes | Yes | Yes |
For production traffic over the public internet, verify-full is the safe default. require is enough on a private network where you trust the route. Most managed providers (Supabase, Neon, etc.) require at least require.
You can pass the mode either through the form (SSL mode dropdown) or as a ?sslmode=… parameter on the URL.
Postgres-compatible providers
Anything that speaks the Postgres wire protocol works through this driver. There is no special configuration: paste the DSN your provider gives you and connect.
Supabase
Use the connection string from Project settings → Database → Connection string. Pick the Direct connection string for read/write workloads, or the Pooled (PgBouncer) string for serverless or high-fan-out workloads.
postgresql://postgres.PROJECT_REF:PASSWORD@aws-0-REGION.pooler.supabase.com:6543/postgres
sslmode=require is implicit. Supabase also supports IP allowlisting; make sure your machine is allowed if you have it enabled.
Neon
Grab the connection string from the Neon dashboard. It includes the endpoint hostname and an ?sslmode=require parameter.
postgresql://USER:PASSWORD@ep-xxxxx.REGION.aws.neon.tech/DATABASE?sslmode=require
Neon endpoints can scale to zero. The first query after a cold start takes a moment longer than usual; subsequent queries are fast.
TimescaleDB and Timescale Cloud
Identical to PostgreSQL. The hypertables, continuous aggregates and other Timescale features show up as regular tables and views in the schema browser; you query them with standard SQL.
CockroachDB
CockroachDB ships as its own dedicated driver in QoreDB (it has its own engine option), but the connection format is the same:
postgresql://USER:PASSWORD@HOST:26257/DATABASE?sslmode=verify-full
The default port is 26257, not 5432.
Schema browsing
Once connected, expand the connection in the sidebar to walk down the tree:
Connection → Database → Schema → Tables / Views / Routines / Triggers
The default search path follows your role's search_path setting. If you don't see your tables, make sure you opened the right database (each PG instance can hold many) and that you have privileges on the schema.
Roles and permissions
QoreDB uses whatever role you connect as. Common gotchas:
- Read-only role: works fine for SELECT, but the inline data editor and the DDL editor will surface permission errors when you try to mutate.
- No CONNECT on database: the connection itself fails. Check
GRANT CONNECT ON DATABASE …. - Default
publicschema removed in PG 15+: in fresh PG 15 clusters, the public schema is restricted. Ask your DBA or grant explicitUSAGE/CREATEto your role.
Common issues
Where to go next
- SSH tunneling for databases behind a bastion
- Vault and profiles to organize many connections
- Querying: editor and autocomplete to start writing SQL
